About the Site

Overview

Welcome to Penobscot Marine Museum's education website, Penobscot Bay History Online. Our goal is to provide a flexible tool that will help students and teachers to explore Maine's maritime history.

Use this site:
  • To learn about the maritime history of the Penobscot Bay region of Maine using the museum's collections and resources.
  • As a portal to link to other web resources.
  • As a resource to address the Maine Learning Results through maritime history.
The site has three parts:

Nine units introduce the user to maritime Maine's settlement, resources, occupations, vessels, and art. Meet captains and codfish, lobsters and lumber schooners, mates and Mawooshen. Within each unit a User's Guide allows you to find subheadings for the topic; For Educators is a link to Learning Results and Activities; and Resources offers a list of print and electronic sources for more information.

Each unit is illustrated with historic photographs and images of manuscripts, paintings, maps, charts, and objects from the museum's collections.

SEARCH OUR COLLECTION

Our site is supported by a searchable collections database. Click on image captions to see an item's full description, or find related items using the keyword search function.

SPECIAL FEATURES

Read the journal of a 16 year old Belfast boy who sailed to California and back again in 1866. Journal pages are presented in typescripts side by side with scans of the original pages.

Use our glossary to check definitions of maritime vocabulary, find short biographies of significant people, and learn more about some related topics. As you read our units, definitions pop up as you mouse over highlighted words.

A request to our Users:
