Ship Red Jacket

Geographic Location: Rockland, Maine
ID Number: 1978_44
Keywords: Orient, Australia, Clipper Ship, 1978.44

Description:
Rockland-built clipper ship Red Jacket. Well-known for its fast 13-day, 1-hour passage from New York to Liverpool, in 1854, she was sold to British owners for regular passage between England and Australia.

When Percy Sanborn created this painting Red Jacket was long gone, having been put in the London Quebec timber trade in the late 1860s then finished her life as a coal hulk in the Cape Verde islands after 1882, but the popular Currier and Ives print of her and other prints could have been used as a source for his painting.
