Description:
Hay was a very important export from the Penobscot Bay area, particularly as a cargo that was brought to seaports from inland parts of Maine. Hay was the gasoline of the nineteenth century, as it "fueled" the horses that provided most transportation in both cities and in the countryside. Hay also served well as an insulator when shipping ice.
