This is the journal of Edwin Mitchell, from Belfast, Maine, who sailed to California in 1866 aboard the Ivanhoe. Edwin was only 16 years old at the time, but he kept a detailed and observant diary of daily events at sea and in port. When he returned to Belfast, he abandoned the maritime life, and went on to make his living selling eggs. |
