Introduction

Few artifacts or documents survive from the period of early European explorers and settlers of Maine. This is the foundation of Penobscot Bay's maritime history, but Penobscot Marine Museum has limited resources in its collection. We present this unit as important background information for other topics. Where we can, we provide images from museum collections. More often, the best illustrations are in other museums and libraries to which we provide links.
