Overview
Welcome to Penobscot Marine Museum's education website, Penobscot Bay History Online. Our goal is to provide a flexible tool that will help students, teachers, researchers and other users to explore Maine's maritime history.
Use this site:
- To learn about the maritime history of the Penobscot Bay region of Maine using the museum's collections and resources.
- As a portal to link to other web resources.
- As a resource to address the Maine Learning Results and Common Core Standards through maritime history.
The site has three parts:
Learn About
Eleven units introduce the user to maritime Maine's settlement, resources, occupations, vessels, and art. Meet captains and codfish, lobsters and lumber schooners, mates and Mawooshen. Within each unit a User's Guide allows you to find subheadings for the topic; For Educators is a link to Learning Results and Activities; and Resources offers a list of print and electronic sources for more information.
Each unit is illustrated with historic photographs and images of manuscripts, paintings, maps, charts, and objects from the museum's collections.

Our site is supported by a searchable collections database. Click on images to see an item's full description, or find related items using the keyword search function. Be sure to try Advanced Search to make sure that slight variations in spacing and spelling are not limiting your search results.
Special Features
Read historic journals:
- A sixteen year old boy from Belfast who sailed as a cabin boy on a voyage to San Francisco in 1866
