Maritime Communities: Introduction

Maritime Communities looks at how areas are settled, what people look for when they settle, and how their settlement fits into a network of communication and transportation. We explore occupations that make up maritime communities, serving shore-based and sea-based industries, and we investigate the social , domestic, and economic patterns of coastal Maine in the 18th to 20th centuries.

This unit presents the daily lives of people in maritime communities around Penobscot Bay--food, clothing, houses, religion, education, recreation, and business. It compares life at sea and life on land, and looks at the influence of technological change on the nature of community.
