Detail shows Penobscot Bay. This is about as accurate a chart that was available for navigation into and out of Penobscot Bay in the mid-19th century when shipping in the area was near its peak. Local sailors did not need a chart, and indeed probably did not bother with one. But it was enough for strangers to get a sense of the Bay, and it was used in conjunction with printed Sailing Directions which provided details about entering the various harbors and traversing the channels.
